Seven formatting mistakes that make a self-published book look self-published

Formatting is the first quality signal a reader receives, and it lands before a single sentence is judged. A book with inconsistent chapter openers, orphaned headings and hard-coded page breaks reads as unfinished even when the prose is strong.

The most common fault we see in submitted manuscripts is manual spacing. Authors press return four times to push a chapter title down the page. That works in the document they are looking at and breaks in every reflowable format their readers will actually use.

The second is inconsistent heading styles. If chapter one uses a styled Heading 1 and chapter nine uses bold 16pt body text, the generated table of contents will silently omit chapter nine. Nobody catches this until a reader complains.

Third: front matter that is out of order or incomplete. A title page, copyright page and table of contents are the minimum. A dedication placed after the first chapter is a structural error, not a stylistic choice.

Fourth: images that are embedded at screen resolution. What looks acceptable on a laptop turns to mush on a high-density tablet and is unusable in print.

Fifth: mixed quotation marks. Straight quotes and curly quotes in the same paragraph are a giveaway that content was pasted from multiple sources without a cleanup pass.

Sixth: no back matter. An about-the-author page, a request for a review and links to your other titles do more for a debut author's sales than most marketing spend.

Seventh: a table of contents that was typed by hand. It will drift the moment you insert a chapter, and readers who tap an entry and land in the wrong place do not tap a second time.

Every one of these is mechanical, which means it is detectable before publication. Run a structural pass on your manuscript before you upload it, fix the seven above, and your book will read as professionally produced regardless of your budget.
